Actinic Keratosis (AK)

  • Also known as solar keratosis, is a crusty scaly, non-painful growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • It is sometimes better detected by touching the skin, as their texture is that of very fine sandpaper.
  • Considered a precancer because if left alone, could develop into Squamous cell carcinoma.
  • For every 5 Actinic Keratosis lesions, there is a 45% chance of developing one Squamous cell carcinoma per year. This is the reason why it is so important to treat AK’s as soon as possible.
  • AK appears on skin that has been frequently exposed to the sun or to artificial sources of UV light, such as tanning machines.
