May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

By , On , In News

Every year, the month of May is globally recognized as Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Since our lives have been overshadowed by disease for most of 2020. I’m sure the last thing you want to hear about is more disease, suffering and death. Luckily, this is where skin cancer is different! Although we can definitely not underestimate the seriousness and potential lethal effects of skin cancer, it is also one of the most preventable types of cancer.

I think COVID-19 taught us all the incredible power of prevention. We have experienced first-hand that if we put in some effort to follow the rules and do what we are supposed to, it actually makes a big difference! We can protect ourselves and others from getting the disease and we can save lives! The same goes for skin cancer…

Nearly 85% of melanoma and 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV-rays from the sun. That means if we put in an effort to protect our skins from the sun, we can prevent almost all skin cancers.By sharing information on the dangers associated with unprotected sun exposure as well as encouraging people to examine their skins for the warning signs of skin cancer, we can save lives. What awesome news!

Get the Word Out About Skin Cancer

Thankfully, skin cancer is a kind of cancer that you can see with the naked eye. Still, it may go undetected during the initial stages. To enable you to understand your skin better and self-assess any warning signs of skin cancer, we have launched a special campaign this Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

Our Skin Cancer Awareness Month Campaign

By following these easy tips, you can remarkably cut down your risk of developing skin cancer and/or detect it when it is still very treatable:

#SpotTheSpot:

Check for any spot on the skin that continues to hurt, itch, scab, crust, or bleed.

#MindYourMole:

Check for a mole, birthmark or brown mark that increases in thickness, size, changes texture or color, or is larger than a pencil eraser.

#BanTheTan:

Protect your skin and prevent unwanted tanning with proper sun protection. Always wear a wide-brimmed hat, sun-protective clothing, and sunscreen when stepping out into the sun.

Share Your Success Stories

Do you have a history of skin cancer? This Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage you to share your story on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. This can be a great way to establish a community of Skin Cancer Beaters and Healthy Skin Champs.
